Bit O’Luck

About Saint Patrick

According to historians, Saint Patrick was born in Britain. At the age of 16 he was taken from his home by Irish raiders and forced into slavery.  For next six years of his live he was a shepherd overseeing the animals. He longed to escape and return home and finally was able to escape his master. After he escaped, he persuaded a ship captain to let him board a ship and traveled home.

Saint Patrick had grown closer to God when he was in Ireland. It was natural that once back in his homeland, he became a cleric. He then decided to return to Ireland and practice spreading the belief of Christianity.

It is thought that his fellow Christians in Ireland did not believe that his motives were pure. Therefore they judged and persecuted him based on their belief that he paid kings and judges to follow him and therefore he must have been motivated by personal gain. They felt that these favors led to his becoming a Bishop and he would use that position for personal wealth.

While there is some mystery regarding Saint Patrick’s life, according to his writings,  he claimed to have baptized thousands of people and ordained many priests.

It is said that Saint Patrick used the three -leafed shamrock in his teachings. He used it as a symbol or illustration of the Christian belief of three persons in one God.  The first story of the shamrock came out in 1726 but it is believed there were earlier documented accounts.

The professional and talented floral designers at Steve’s Flowers and Gifts have created wonderful Saint Patrick’s Day themed flower arrangements, plants and gifts.
