World Autism Awareness Day
On this April 2nd, we will acknowledge all of those dealing with autism on World Autism Awareness Day. Back in December 18, 2007, this day was officially designated as such by the “United Nations General Assembly”. The reason for the day is to promote the raising of awareness for people with autism.
Autism effects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States. Typically signs do not appear until the ages of 2 to 3 but it has been known to appear in children as young as 18 months. Autism severely impedes the ability to interact in social settings. As with many disorders, early detection and intervention can be key to increase the chances of positive outcomes later in life.
The first account of someone using the term autism came in 1911. It was then that Psychiatrist Eugen Bleuler described the disorder to have a multitude of symptoms including schizophrenia resulting in extreme cases of social withdrawal. Spectrum Disorder which is another scientific term for autism, defines this as developmental disorder that effects behavior and communicative abilities of a person. People are rendered unable to navigate social interactions which results in restricted behavior.
In an article published by Dr. Leo Kanner, “Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact”, an article published by Dr. Leo Kanner 1943 and one written in 1944 by Hans Asperger entitled “Autism Psychopathology Article” were valuable to future studies as they disputed that autism was related to schizophrenia. By 1980, autism was defined as a disorder that was not tied to schizophrenia. Today it is accepted that children with autism whether of normal or high intelligence are simply not able to function with usual social or communication skills.
By 2013 conditions of autism were combined into their own separate category. These conditions covered severity and the detectable symptoms. In addition to the normal symptoms related to social disorders, there are frequently additional issues related to gastrointestinal disorders, seizures or sleep disorders. Often people will also suffer with mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues.
The talented floral designers at Steve’s Flowers and Gifts would be delighted to assist you as you honor someone on this April 2nd World Autism Awareness Day. This is the perfect occasion to celebrate this day and help with increasing awareness of the characteristics of people with this condition. What better way to promote a sense of understanding and caring than to gift someone with flowers, a green plant or a tasteful gift!
