Steve’s Flowers and Gifts Inc.
Family Owned and Operated
Steve’s Flowers and Gifts Inc. was founded in 1973 by Steve and Linda Huth. As Steve was attending college, he worked for a local flower shop, delivering, doing odd jobs, and eventually designing. Steve had dreams of opening his own floral facility on the south side of Indianapolis, and when opportunity came, he went to work to make it happen. His philosophy from the start was making sure his customers were happily satisfied. The dedication and commitment towards his goal allowed Steve to move into a larger facility in 1976, and opened a second location in the fast growing town of Greenwood in 1982. In October of 1988, Steve designed and had built his own building which consists of 7,000 square feet.
With greenhouse, card and gift display area, design room, plant department, and a large receiving and delivery area, he supplies his customers with exceptional service and a comfortable setting for shopping and browsing. Through the years, Steve has worked hard for excellent quality in designs, which led to the expansion of the original location in 1999. Expanding this location 3,000 more square feet enabled Steve to have a larger design center to monitor quality control and ensure customer satisfaction.
In 1995, Steve added the convenience of ordering online at www.stevesflowers.com. Today, Steve has made the commitment to adding the convenience of online ordering, while at the same time providing the Personal Service that his customers have come accustom to.

Father’s Day History
Father’s Day finally became a permanent national holiday when President Nixon signed it into law in 1972. There were many events that lead up to this becoming an official holiday and many people to give credit to for believing in the need for such a day to honor all fathers.
President Calvin Coolidge suggested a recognition for Father’s Day in 1924. Then in 1957, Senator Margaret Chase Smith proclaimed to Congress that we had been ignoring fathers for over 40 years. She said that only mothers had received proper recognition. Finally in 1966 the first proclamation of Father’s Day was issued by President Lyndon B. Johnson. It was declared that the day to honor all fathers would be the third Sunday in June.
In 1908 an observance honoring fathers was held. A terrible mining accident occurred in West Virginia leaving many dead include 250 fathers. Grace Clayton was the daughter of one of those fathers. Grace asked the pastor Robert Webb to honor all of the fathers lost in that accident. This observance did not have influence outside of the small town that Grace was from but in later years a growing trend began.
Jane Addams from Chicago proposed a Father’s Day celebration in 1911 but it was rejected. Then in 1912 a celebration for Father’s Day was held in Vancouver Washington influenced by a Methodist Pastor by the name of J.J. Berringer.
Then in 1915 a man by the name of Harry C. Meek, who was a member of the Lions Club, claimed that Father’s Day was his idea. He wanted Father’s Day to fall on the third Sunday in June. The Lions Club International went along with him and named him the “Originator of Father’s Day”. Mr. Meek continued his quest to promote Father’s Day as an official holiday.
By 1916, President Woodrow Wilson had received sufficient requests for a special day to honor all Fathers. He went to Spokane to speak at a Father’s Day celebration and suggested in his speech that this day be recognized as a federal holiday. However, when the concept reached Congress it was denied. The majority of the members in Congress were concerned that it would become too commercialized and the true meaning would be all about companies profiting.
There are other great examples of people promoting Father’s Day. One such example was the case of Sonora Dodd. Her father had fought in the civil war and became the single parent of six children. She organized a Father’s Day celebration at the local Spokane YMCA in 1910. Then she went off to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and her cause faded.
By the 1930’s Sonora returned to the city of Spokane and took up the initiative again. She had the backing of the Father’s Day Council. This group was founded by New York Associated Men’s Wear Retailers. As you might imagine they were influential with the manufacturing companies that produced such items as ties, tobacco pipes and other traditional men’s gifts.
