Holocaust Remembrance Day
This year on April 21st, Holocaust Remembrance Day which was established by Congress, is observed in the United States as an annual commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust. Yom Hashoah is the actual Hebrew name for Holocaust Remembrance Day.
It is estimated that six million Jewish people died between 1941 and 1945. During this time the German invasion of the Soviet Union and the end of the war in Europe in May 1945 occurred. Nazi Germany and their collaborators orchestrated the systematic killing of those of the Jewish faith.
Hitler began his rise to power starting in January of 1933. Many historians consider this to be the Holocaust era. During the Hitler regime, a main focus was on the persecution of Jewish people. The term Holocaust became the common in 1960 by the English speaking world. Though Shoah is the actual Hebrew word. Shoah which references catastrophe, best describes the event.
In Israel, there is the sound of a siren that goes off for two minutes. During this time a silent devotion is observed throughout the country. The siren sounds once at 11:oo am and again at Sundown. All radio and television programming is centered around events of World War II. No public entertainment happens on this day because most of the public businesses are closed to observe the national holiday.
The Holocaust is a lesson about how our actions, when faced with injustice to others, can have a life long effect on the outcome. “Never Again: What You Do Matters” is the theme of Holocaust Remembrance Day. Out of fear, many German citizens that disapproved of the injustices during the Holocaust era did little to intervene. Despite the attempts of some brave citizens that did attempt to make a difference and stop the violence, Jewish people were stripped of their citizenship and basic human rights.
