Shining Spirit Bouquet
April 12th is Easter. Children will be excited for the Easter Egg Hunt and the Easter Basket. Many years ago, the Easter festival was more popular with Catholics than Protestants. The Puritans of New England considered both Easter and Christmas as festivals for heavy drinking and merrymaking. Of course by the 19th century this all changed. Now it is a time to be with family and enjoy traditional activities that are meaningful.
Easter is a religious holiday celebrated by Christians around the world. Christians consider it to be a celebration of the day of resurrection of Jesus. The date of Easter changes from year to year due to the fact that it falls each year on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. Due to this change, Easter will be celebrated on April 4th in 2021.
Like many holidays, Easter is related to a changing season. Easter as it is an early Spring holiday. Spring brings about a symbolic coming back to life by the plants and trees that have been dormant for the winter. Those of us in the Northern Hemisphere are happy to see warmer temperatures and less darkness. This symbolism of the coming back to life is a correlation to the resurrection of Jesus.
According to references, the name “Easter” was derived from the name of a goddess in England by the name of Eostre. This was found in the writings of the Venerable Bede. A British Monk, Bede lived during the late seventh and early eight century.
“Bede wrote that the month in which English Christians were celebrating the resurrection of Jesus had been called Eosturmonath in Old English, referring to a goddess named Eostre. And even though Christians had begun affirming the Christian meaning of the celebration, they continued to use the name of the goddess to designate the season.”
The writings of Bede became very influential in the continuation of Easter becoming the permanent name of the holiday.
Those of the Jewish faith refer to this time of year as Passover. This is written in The Hebrew Bible. Passover represents the commemoration of the liberation of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. Jewish pilgrims flocked to Jerusalem during the time of Jesus. They did so in order to ask that God to free his chosen people from their slavery by the Romans. Jesus traveled to Jerusalem during one of these times. As written, the resulting disturbance in the Temple ultimately led to his crucifixion.
