The concept of “Black Friday” has an interesting history. From originally being named Black Friday because people called in sick the day after Thanksgiving, to the police in some major cities referring to the day as Black Friday because of the crowds and traffic to today being commonly referred to as the best holiday shopping day.
In addition to being the best shopping day of the season, Black Friday is also known as the beginning of USA Christmas shopping season. Last year, when Covid was peaking, many people opted for online purchasing so they could safely shop from home. That has been a growing trend for several years and now has become even more popular. Cyber Monday, which is sometimes referred to as “Blue Monday”, was created as a special day to encourage consumers to do online shopping. This is a perfect theme now when many people would much prefer to stay in their home and shop from their computer where they are away from crowds.
This day falls on the first Monday following Thanksgiving. The term Cyber Monday originated in 2005 by a member of the National Retail Federation. It was advertised in a publication as the up and coming biggest online shopping date of the year. During that year 77% of online retailers reported increased sales. By 2017 sales had grown to $6.59 billion.
